Although one of my resolutions was to donate my time more, I
already was quite a bit. This year, I decided to try my hand as a catechist
(teacher) for the religious education in our church. It was kind of a spur of
the moment decision, but the team does a good job putting together your lesson
plans and providing everything you need. Generations
of Faith is what the class is called. It’s a new model, way different from
CCD of your past. The whole family attends and is involved in the lessons
together. You meet for several hours, once a month. The session starts with a
meal and fellowship. Then everyone groups up in the hall for a opening prayer
and a brief overview of the days lesson.
From there, everyone breaks out into age groups: Lower
Elementary; Upper Elementary; Mixed Elementary; Junior High; High School;
Generation X & Y; Boomers & Seniors. The Hubster and I attend,
obviously in the Gen X/Y class. However, I teach the Upper El class (3-6th
grades). Its really cool to see the kids interact with their parents in my
class. Last week, I was lucky to have a small class (only four families) so I
really got to know them well. We also got to do a pretty cool art project.
This whole session, we are studying the Apostles/Nicene
Creed. There is a lot of heavy stuff in there. What I really like about doing
this is that I learn a lot myself by teaching.
Similarly, I was asked to be the sponsor for a young adult
going through the confirmation process in our church. Sitting in class with her
weekly has really taught me about this faith that I have been a part of for 30
years! My “sponsee” is such a cool chick. I say she’s 15 going on 45. She’s
bright, insightful and wise. I have really enjoyed getting to know her and
really look forward to standing at her side while she takes the appropriate
steps to confirm her faith.
